Next up on our series is one of our newest teaching apprentice, Katie! Learn more about her competition journey below.
1) Background: How long have you been pole dancing and when did you first come to PFS?
In November I will be pole dancing for 3 years! I came to PFS April of last year :).
2) What made you decide to compete?
I wanted to challenge and push myself when I signed up for PPC back in April. Competing makes you progress so much faster because now you have to push yourself to meet your goals by a deadline. I also loved the rush and loved meeting so many other dancers, so I decided to do it all over again for Northwest!
3) Can you share a little bit about your piece? What inspired you, song choice, costume choice, choreography, style, etc.
This time I've signed up for two categories (why I do this to myself lol). For exotic level 3, I chose "Hate or Glory" by Gesaffelstein as my song. It's such a good song and so unique! The styles I've borrowed for this piece is a mix of American Exotic and Russian Exotic, with my own personal twist to them. I wanted this to be different and unique compared to the usual slow and sensual exotic routines (hopefully it is!).
For Floorwork/Low Flow, my song is "Killing Strangers" by Marilyn Manson. One day months ago, my husband showed me this song and said, "I think this is up your alley and you'd like to dance to this one". And he was right! My style for this one is a lot of flow with very punctuated hard hits to compliment the song. There's also a good amount of liquid motion influence as well.
4) What has been the been the biggest challenge for you in creating this piece?
Making them! This is the first time I've choreographed something for competition! I'm nervous and I hope I don't end up looking silly on stage!
5) What has been the best part of this process?
Seeing myself explore and expand more dance styles. And pushing myself to doing tricks I didn't think I'd do anytime soon.
6) What are you looking forward to the most after competition is over?
Just to dance! And to focus more on my classes and the students.
7) Anything else?!
On top of it all, just have fun! Can't wait to see everyone's pieces!! #teamPFS #PFSslay
